West coast
Far away from the normal busy tourism, a visitor of the west coast can enjoy a coast landscape without hardly any concrete. This coast has a very interesting and completely different than the "normal" Algarve "Strandscape"..
A very popular and not to miss point of interest is cape CABO DE SÃO VICENTE (near Sagres), the most south westerly point of Europe.
Here at Cabo de São Vincente starts towards the north the West Coast, towards ALJEZUR. This wild romantic coast - COSTA VINCENTINA - is a since a couple of years by the state protected nature parc, with beautiful sandy beaches, but also with hanging cliffs up to a height of 120 meter.
At ALJEZUR you can find the wonderful beaches of PRAIA MONTE CLERIGO or PRAIA DA ARRIFANA with the ruins of ancient castles. Towards the borderline of the Algarve, in the Northwest, you can find the lovely village of ODECEIXE with its beach with the same name.
In this mainly precipitous part of the Algarve, you always encounter rather large sand beaches, breaking this coast line, again and again. Here the good surf never seems to end, an impressive panorama fascinates the beholders' eye.
It was from this wild coast that the famous Henry the Navigator sent his fellow countrymen out in their caravelle sailing ships on their impressive discovery voyages.

“Where the land ends and the sea begins!” like this, even nowadays, the Portuguese describes this place, where you can really experience the history.
Typical for this region and worth while a visit are the beaches of PRAIA DO CASTELEJO near Vila do Bispo and PRAIA DO BORDEIRA in Carrapateira.
