In In various small grocery stores (Mini-Mercados) you could think you are attended by your grandma. The people are always friendly and ready to help, especially if you try to speak some Portuguese. It looks like time has passed by unnoticed.
In the small market of Ferragudo you can buy daily your fresh fish, seafood and vegetables. This is a popular point of encounter for especially the older locals. Especially worth a visit is the small church on top of the town. Here you can enjoy a panoramic view of the harbour entrance of Portimão and the Atlantic Ocean.
You will not find any ugly concrete high rise structures or anonymous hotel complexes, but nicely build luxurious villas, cosy apartments and well designed resorts.
On the scattered benches in the centre you will see the older Portuguese men enjoying the shade and discussing fiercely, not to be disturbed by anything.
The main square is the meeting point for both locals as visitors with its sunny terraces.
There are lots of tiny cafes, bars, the post office, the (only) bank and a choice of typical Portuguese restaurants. During the summer months, every weekend there are various activities at night in the square, like folk music, dancing, performances, reminding of one big family party.
